Chapter Fifteen

Delia blamed her hunger on the smell of Mildred Dunlevy’s soup earlier. She told herself that the brief time it took her to get a quick bite to eat at the hotel restaurant in town was necessary for more reasons than one. She used the public restroom to put her hair in order. After a quick bite and a bracing cup of tea, she left the hotel.

She was about to turn left when she heard angry voices to her right. She recognized both of them. One belonged to Chester Vanderlin. The other to the woman from the train. Delia stepped back into the inset for the front doors to the hotel. Should anyone exit, they would hit her with the door. It was worth the risk.

She heard the nearby voices continue. If anything, the argument seemed to increase with intensity. She reached into her purse and took out a small mirror. After adjusting the rod that held the mirror to extend its length, she used the mirror to spy on the couple.

As she watched them argue, a memory pulled at her brain. It was of Chester on a recent day but he was speaking with another woman. On that day, Chester held a telegram in his hand and Araminta Whitmer leaned in to read it.

She realized that both women, Araminta and the woman from the train, were overly familiar with Chester. It was the way they leaned their bodies toward him. In Araminta’s case, she seemed upset about the contents of the telegram at the time. This woman was outright angry with him. Neither woman feared him. Both women appeared drawn to him, like moths to a flame as her grandmother would say.

The voices began moving away. They had their backs to her. She tucked her mirror into her purse and moved from the door just in time. The doorman came out to hold the door for another hotel customer. Delia kept moving as quickly as she could behind the two people. They had stopped their argument for now. Given the way she saw Chester draw the woman away, she assumed he was worried of being seen with her.

She wondered what Virginia Gray would think if she saw Chester with the beautiful woman from the train. They turned after a building into an alley. Delia stopped when she reached the corner. Rather than turn, she remained where she was. The woman from the train was out of patience with Chester. She was now arguing with him again.

Once again, Delia knew the woman was speaking in German. It surprised her to hear Chester respond in the same language. It also frustrated her to no end. It was a language she had never mastered. Certainly not well enough to follow anyone who spoke it this fluently. The two of them barely took a breath as they argued over each other.

Finally, there was silence. She wondered what that meant. She contemplated taking her mirror out again to check on them when she heard Chester murmur something in German.
